If paramedics weren’t already appreciated enough before the strain the past couple of years has added to the health system, then these folks who work tirelessly and selflessly to help keep us safe (and alive), deserve even more recognition and respect. I’m sure we speak for the community at large when we say, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
It’s people like Jayden Hedt, our M8 of April, that we thank the stars above for when we need them. And we couldn’t think of a better candidate to feature as our inspirational guy to our TEAMM8’s. His dedication to living life to its absolute fullest is totally inspiring if not astonishing. Perhaps it’s what he faces on a daily basis that gives him this zest to grab life by the proverbial and live it loud and without regret.
The very first time Jayden boarded a plane when he was 14 years old, he jumped out of it. Yep, his first plane experience was to skydive. So it’s safe to say that from a young age this country-raised boy didn’t let fear get in the way of anything. Spreading his wings and leaving Australia to work as a paramedic in London before returning to the sunny shores that he loves so much. But not before working in Buckingham Palace at the Queen's Garden parties.
We asked Jayden for a few fun facts about himself and he told us that he completelysnapped his Pectoral Major on the bench press which has left him with a large penis lookalike scar on his left shoulder and that he wet the bed until the age of 12. His ingenious mum made him a waterproof insert for his sleeping bag when he went on school excursions. How could you not love this man for disclosing this to us!
Then he told us that he eats ice-cream everyday and has never followed a diet or fitness program. Love also turned into respect, ok, and maybe a little envy.
NAME: JAYDEN HEDT
OCCUPATION: I’m a paramedic who has worked within specialised units in London and now I am currently working at Bondi in Sydney…..keep your eyes peeled for Bondi Rescue! ;)
WHERE IS YOUR HOME TEAM? I grew up in a teeny tiny beautiful country town in Victoria called Mount Beauty. It’s surrounded by rolling mountains at the base of a ski resort - Falls Creek. We even got to go to the snow one day a week in high school as our ‘sports day’.
WHO DO YOU PLAY FOR NOW? Coogee Beach, Sydney. I’m most commonly seen strutting around the beaches oiled up in my watermelon swim togs with an ice-cream in hand.
WHAT'S YOUR GAME PLAN? I’ve got some big things in the works for this year! Currently completing my Masters in Critical Care, finishing my Cert IV Fitness, competing in WBFF Bodybuilding and working towards becoming a Firefighter. I’ll also be asking love island if they want to give me a shot!
WHAT'S YOUR STRATEGY TO ACHIEVE IT? I’m successful by being proactive with my time and i'd recommend these tips to anyone else looking to grow.
- Early Morning, Early nights - Quality sleep.
- Surround yourself with motivating people that challenge you and fill you with belief.
- Know your short and long term goals, write them down and grind everyday. Enjoy the process and say YES to opportunities.
- Take risks, have a crack, fail and learn.
- Get comfortable with being uncomfortable, mental gains are important too.
LIST ONE OR TWO ‘GOLD MEDAL’ MOMENTS IN YOUR LIFE: In 2017 I was working in London as a Tactical Response Paramedic. During this time I responded to the 2017 Grenfell Tower Fire Tragedy which resulted in over 70 fatalities. Following this incident I was faced with mental health challenges. It taught me how important it is to reach out to friends, family, colleagues and support networks. I’m a big advocate for mental health, particularly men as I know how many of us put up walls to hide the struggles.
It’s time to break down the associated stigma and raise awareness that there is always help when needed! COVID has proved to be tough for many whether that’s physically, mentally or financially. Let’s work as a team, ‘Are you Okay?’.
WHO ARE YOUR CHAMPIONS? Travis Pastrana - He has inspired the worlds generations of action sports to achieve the once thought impossible! This outrageous mindset has pushed limits and shown that you can live a life like there’s no tomorrow. Be brave, be bold, be courageous and inspire others to do the same!
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES AN EVERYDAY CHAMPION? Someone who shows continual resilience and determination despite failure, setbacks and difficulties.
WHAT’S YOUR MOTO? ‘It’s not about what happens, it’s about how you react.’ We can learn to control our emotions, but it takes practice and mindfulness…..Optimism and happiness will follow!
